Corno brings the figure to life (cont'd)
Sean Simon, ARTspeak Magazine, New York
A characteristic Corno canvas sets a muscular male torso or a shapely pair of female buttocks against a boldly brushed abstract ground. The figure itself contains a swirl of visceral reds and strident yellows that create an impression of glistening sweat under strobe lights or bathed in neon. These paintings capture the excitement of neo decadent night life of healthy young bodies writhing in jet set sensoriums. This is the glittery world that Andy Warhol relished but never really painted. This Quebec artist makes clear in her work that the fast lane crosses international borders. Her paintings capture the fierce sexual energy of rock videos in exciting painterly terms.
The same sensuality can be seen in Corno’s paintings of faces, which are invariably large-eyed and full lipped, in the androgynous manner of Natasha Kinski or the young Mick Jagger. Corno makes of such faces contemporary icons.
One should not be distracted, however, by the flashy qualities of these paintings from the fact that Corno is a serious artist whose work succeeds precisely because of its compositional strengths and painterly vitality. In this regard, Corno is an artist who belongs to a great tradition
